Weird Obsessions

Hello readers, of this blog and or my books. I’m back, and here’s what I’ve to say.

So this week I took a step back and read a bit less. Only 5 books completed, though I’m working on a sixth. It’s a bit longer than the others, so it’s taking some time. That and I’ve felt less motivated to read after getting a book a day up until the 23rd day of the year. I wasn’t able to keep it up, so I shrugged to myself and decided to do other things.

So what might catch my interest as much as reading? Oh, just another random thing that no one else would care to do. Heh, I’ve been watching a guy on YouTube repair matchbox cars. Yeah, I’m not sure why I enjoy it so much, but there it is and I do. Marty’s Matchbox Makeovers. He’s fun, and sometimes has little skits with a koala puppet. But I find it fascinating to watch someone take some beaten down little toy and make it look like new. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart when it comes to Australians, so it’s a bonus that Marty is one. There are a few people from that place down-under that I watch from YouTube, and I’m happy I get to add yet another one to my list.

In the past I’ve found a few people repairing these old toy cars, and I watched them for awhile, but I find Marty’s channel much more entertaining. Though I’ll admit I learned a few things like metal plating from the others. However there are even more things to learn from this gentleman.

This sort of thing happens to me. I find a random thing on YouTube or the like that for whatever reason takes my interest and then I gorge. If you were to ask Samantha I’m sure she could list all the strange things that take my fancy, but a couple of the others have been Steve1984 and his MRE channel, and something I think called tiny cooking. I’ll just watch these for hours, for no reason other than I find them extremely relaxing and entertaining. It could be in part because I’m usually exhausted after not getting enough sleep, and I just want something calming to watch. Reading sometimes just doesn’t cut it for me.

Anyway, another thing I did over the weekend was watch a film called Lighthouse. It started Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe. It’s all in black and white, and has a feel like many older films I’ve watched. Examples being The Seventh Seal and for the life of me I can’t remember the name of this other film. Bah, I just spent 20 minutes searching for it. I think it was set during WWII. A soldier of some sort finds himself stranded on an island, and begins to lose his mind. Imagining an entire populace he rules over them. He’s the only actor on screen the whole time, though you hear the voices of the people he imagines. Anyway, Lighthouse. I liked it. Both Willem and Robert do an amazing job, and it just gets crazy. By the end I didn’t like either one very much, but it was interesting to watch them spiral into madness.

And that’s about it for what I’ve done save for a bit of writing. So I suppose I’ll leave you all for now. Have a great week!

D&D with a Chaotic Neutral Bard

Hello again to all of you. I return, and this time I actually got out of my home for once. Heh.

First, lets do my usual update. Eight books read since last week. YAY. Also I did some writing and things are coming along nicely.

Enough of that, here’s what you are all here for… maybe. Dungeons and Dragons!

So our little party returned from clearing out a grove full of goblins and their like. We got our reward from the elf we had talked to, and everyone just decided it was time to go out to the stronghold filled with orcs.

My character never one for a fight decided it was the right time to start asking everyone what their motivation was. Everyone but the teifling monk said it was all about money. So my bard, being chaotic neutral asked why we didn’t just kill everyone in town for money. He wasn’t serious, but he was trying to figure out the group. No one seemed to want to do that, but he continued to push, implying that orcs were just people too.

That was until the tiefling monk said that she didn’t like orcs because they killed her family. Well, that didn’t sit well with the bard, as he seems to like her. She’s been the only one that has been nice to him, even if she tends to treat him like a little kid at times.

They all decided we should take a rest before we headed out, and went back to their inn. The bard made a less than stellar performance, and then they all went to bed.

Waking up they all found their usual ride, the farmer that seem to come to town every day. They tried to get information about the stronghold, but he didn’t have much to say. Once they got near the fortification, we all wandered around to see what was going on. There were two orcs and a couple of wargs watching the only entrance to the place, but there was an opening in the back that allowed our elf to take a peak in. It was filled with orcs, but no other wargs were seen.

We decided we should take down the guards, and see about trapping the orcs inside, at least for awhile. We all charged, but rolled very poorly for our initiative.

The orcs ran towards us and chucked their javelins, missing everyone. Our Monk threw hers right back at them, but missed as well. Now I’m a bit iffy on exactly who did what, but I know I finished off at least one orc with Vicious Mockery. And also I know our monk took enough damage to faint, but I got her back up on her feet with healing words. But eventually we took all four monsters down.

The monk took exception to one of the wargs and skinned it, thinking to make something out of it.

We took a short rest to heal up, and with my song of rest everyone was healed and got back some spells. But that’s where we ended.

It was a shorter session, as we wound up talking and eating for a bit before we got down to playing. Yet it was another enjoyable visit, and I think we all had a good time, though we’re probably late enough into this campaign that we should start thinking about taking on the big baddy so we can move on to our next campaign.

Anyway, that’s all I have for you this time. I hope you all have an enjoyable week.

Another “B” movie, and things

Howdy folks. I’m back again, so here we go.

Well, what can I say about this last week? Let me think… hrm. Well as usual I read some books. Only 6 this time, I’m attempting to slow down a bit after that year of gluttonous reading I did. At least I’m still finding things that I’m interested in reading after all that. Since I added quite a number of authors to the list of people I like reading it has helped. However even then I still have to find others to read. No matter how quickly someone can put out a book I still read faster than anyone, or any 20 can produce. And that’s if I’m not being too picky.

Anyway, the book is coming along smoothly. Already 18 chapters written, and I’m in the middle of the 19th. I expect something like 30 chapters by the end, depending on the length of each, so I’m better than half way done with the first draft. I’ll probably be looking for input from Samantha soon enough, though I should wait until she isn’t so busy. We’ve both jobs, and it’s been rather hectic for both of us recently. So we’ll see.

Anyway, we watched a movie this weekend. Oh dear, what a movie it was. First I’ll say it was better shot than some of the other movies we’ve watched recently. A 1982 movie, and it looks wonderful. I think I just have a love for films of this era, at least well shot ones, so there’s that. But that doesn’t tell you anything, so here’s the title. Sorceress…. oh man. I don’t even know why it’s called that, it’s about twin warrior women. Lots of topless shots, so if you’re in to that sort of thing, or you can ignore it, there’s that. The writing is off the wall, and the acting, especially the main villain is…. well, unique. His delivery reminded me of Norm Macdonald, so not especially threatening even when he’s suppose to be. Maybe it’s just the company I keep when watching these “B” movies that I get enjoyment out of them, so keep that in mind. MST3K this, meaning watching with a group of people not afraid to have fun. Don’t take anything seriously, because really you can’t, it’s dumb. But in my mind an enjoyable way. I think we’ll be quoting this movie for awhile. It’s Vital.

We also watched a few different anime, or at least their first episodes. I don’t think anything grabbed our attention, but there were a few lines that were amusing. I’m guessing we won’t go back to finish any of them. We might just be burnt out, it happens from time to time. I will say I went back and watched an anime called Outbreak Company from an earlier season, and thought it was amusing. Otaku in another world trying to proselytize otaku culture to a fantasy world. Silly, though as with such shows a little ecchi. Meh, it was something stupid to have on while I did other things, and it make me chuckle a few times. The sports episode was especially amusing.

Well, I think that’s it for this time. I hope you all have an enjoyable week.

Religious Dinosaurs?

Hello again, and Happy New Year!

So, first of all let me get it out of the way. I wound up reading 262 books last year. Heh, and looking back the year before I only did 80. Whoops, seems I went a little overboard. That being said, I think I got about 8 more read since last week’s update. Likely since I finished yet another of Martha Wells Murderbot Diaries books. They’re short, but really fun. I just wish they weren’t so expensive, or were in the Kindle Unlimited section. I bought them as a little gift to myself this year, and because I got a coupon from Amazon for getting a Kindle.

Speaking of the Kindle, I love reading on it, but again I have to say I hate looking for anything to read on it. The store is all messed up, and even when I select something to read it sometimes doesn’t update on the main page and I have to go back and look for the book in the store again to read it. When I want to find anything new I still go back to the phone to search, and even after adding it there I have to find it again in the store on the Kindle. Bah, what a hassle.

Anyhoo, I watched a few movies this weekend. The first was called The Two Popes. I found it interesting, though at times weirdly shot. You get an interesting history lesson, but really what stood out to me was how Anthony Hopkins eats pizza. It’s madness I tell you.

The next was 1977’s Dinosaur Planet. Terrible movie made better by RiffTrax. But only just. You might get by watching it without their antics if you have a large group of friends to make fun of it with, but man was it boring. They mostly just walk around and take rest breaks. The music on the other hand was pure insanity. Someone was going crazy on the synth the whole time, and apparently thought fart noises were musical.

And finally the last movie I watched was Velocipastor. Oh jeez. A pastor, mourning the loss of his parents, travels to China and is infected by a tooth there. Now he’s a weredinasaur. Yeah, it’s crazy. Decently shot, but the effects are just cheap as all heck. On purpose, as it’s a comedy, I think. The music is actually fun too. It all sounds mid-90’s, so that’s neat, and Voltaire makes an appearance. Don’t take it seriously, the film maker didn’t, and it’s a decent enough movie to have fun watching.

Also I watched a show called Nobody’s Looking. Continuing the religious theme, a bunch of redheaded angels are going about their mundane grind of making sure humans don’t kill themselves when a new one arrives. He doesn’t quite understand the bureaucracy of things, and goes rogue rather quickly, trying to help anyone he sees instead of who he’s assigned. It’s a ton of fun. If you don’t like subtitles though, maybe take a pass. Such things don’t bother me as I tend to watch quite a few foreign movies and shows, but I know a few people who are turned off by it.

Alright, the last thing. Really quick. Yes I’m still writing, and the book is coming along. It slowed down there for a couple of weeks, but I’m back on track. I’m thinking September the first draft will be finished, but we’ll see. I know, slow, but I don’t see myself writing any quicker with the time I have free. Sorry about that. If this was my only job I could probably knock it out in a month, but such is life.

Anyway, I hope you all have a great week.
