Writing, Silly or Otherwise

Hello all. How are you? Me, oh I’m just fine. Just writing a blog post about my week.

So what’s been going on? Hmm… not much really. Just reading mostly. Though I’ve been keeping up with the random YouTube channels that I watch. Besides the usual content, what I’ve learned is that once more YouTube is changing things. While I understand why most having jumped ship, I can only think that the nails keep getting hammered in the coffin. Unless things change I imagine another harbor for video media will spring up, or become popular. There’s a bit more restrictions than many can deal with. Perhaps everything will be hosted on Patreon going forward, as that was the first thing all these channel makers went to after the last batch of changes YouTube put into place.

Anyway, enough of that. I did some writing, it went very well. I’m liking the book, and it seems to be easy to put words to page again. I’m glad, I got a little worried there. Perhaps because I switched back to tea instead of coffee today it felt easier. Coffee makes me irritable and anxious. Tea wakes me up, but keeps me calm. But man, do I love coffee.

Oh, and um… heh. Samantha and I had another brainstorming session. This was an unplanned one. While we should have been trying to sleep, both of us tired from our day, her more than me, we started talking. And what do you think we talked about? Why Sonic the Hedgehog of course. Ah man, it was fun. Hilarious scenarios ensued. Now I want to write some fan-fiction, heh. It was so stupid and wonderful I can’t get the ideas out of my head. Maybe we’ll write something up together, I can’t imagine doing it without her input. But yeah, that’s how most things we do happen. A stupid idea comes to us, we take it to extremes and have a great time. Then later work it out into a story. Mostly we accidentally turn something stupid and fun into an almost serious story, so we’ll see if and when we write this thing if it’ll be something serious or not.

In the end Samantha makes it fun to write. I write, it’s what I do. But to find someone who can make such things enjoyable, well that’s magic. And I appreciate it so much when we just throw weird scenarios back and forth, and come up with something wonderful. Usually wonderfully weird and stupid, but oh so enjoyable. At least to me, and us most of the time. Admittedly we probably have a weird sense of humor, but it’s great for us! Heh. So what I’m really saying is find someone, or a group of someones, to bounce ideas off of. Sure you can write by yourself, and you will be most of the time no matter how many people you know, but man is not an island. The world and its people are where the stories come from. From interacting and learning from each other.

Anyway, that’s it for this week. I hope you all have a good one, and I’ll see you next time. Tell stories to each other, no matter how weird.

Just “B” things, and back to writing

Hello all, and welcome. I return again, as is obvious, and I’m filled with amusement.

So before I regale you with what has tickled me, I shall talk about my new book. I’ve finally returned to writing. After taking so long to scour through what was already written in hopes of fixing up certain things I wasn’t pleased with, I’m back on track. It feels odd to write again, and I probably shouldn’t have just stopped all together. One must flex your muscles if you hope to keep them. Fortunately I don’t feel like I’ve lost much, it just took a little longer than previously to write the amount I wanted to.

Anyway, I’ve read another 8 books since last week. Yay fun. And this is what has me all sorts of amused. Not the count, but a certain book. Now, I’ve been reading Wuxia novels… I can hear the groans from here. Sorry I talk about it so much, but I find them fun to read. But what makes them so much more than a good read, is the crazy translations. First, while reading Book 4 of the Ultimate Martial Divine King, there was a part that made me laugh uncontrollably. Here is the snippet that had me crying.

“Brother Chu Hen, what is that broken spirit artifact of yours?”

“Clang!” Chu Hen answered without hesitation.

“Bell?” Everyone was stunned.

Hilarious. The translation for bell sometimes is “CLANG”… hahahahaha. And even weirder they sometimes call it a “clock”. I’ve no idea why, but it’s hilarious. Another thing, one of the chapters is titled “A Dead Horse, A Dead Horse, A Dead Horse.” Oh man, I couldn’t contain myself. There was no horse, dead or otherwise in the chapter. This just cracked me up. I think they were saying something about beating a dead horse, but it came out weird. I had to tell Samantha immediately the next time I saw her. I think she thought it was funny to, but maybe she was just being polite. Either way, I’m just loving reading this stuff. I enjoy the story, but the translation makes it so much more fun. Like watching a “B” movie, you never know what weird thing they are going to put in here.

Speaking of “B” movies, I watched Phoenix the Warrior. Jeez it was bad. The acting was terrible, but the set design was actually pretty good. However the camera work was just awful. Chase scenes would swap angles from right to left, then left to right. It just made it confusing. However there was a scene with a group of decrepit people who worshiped old TV’s that didn’t work anymore, and would chant old TV titles or quotes from old shows. That was fun. Otherwise not really worth your time to watch, though Samantha and I got some amusement out of it. It just makes me appreciate Samantha more when we watch these terrible movies, we have so much fun making jokes about them while viewing. Our own personal MST3K.

Anyway, that’s about it for now. I hope you all have an enjoyable week. Why not go out and watch something bad with friends. You might have a good time.

Playing with Phones, and more Wuxia

Hello again. I have returned.

So anyway, just to update you on my reading journey I was able to read another 10 books this week. Yay fun. Of course all of them were in the wuxia/cultivation genre that I’ve become taken with recently. And again all Chinese translated. While I finished the most recent book in one series I tried out another. If anything the translation is even worse this time. Gender pronouns are all over the place, and switch constantly in this series. Men are either him or her, and the same for women. Also sometimes when others are referring to another person they sometimes use “I” even when it’s obviously not in reference to themselves. Also names are all over the place, switching between what I think are titles or affectionate names without reference, causing me difficulty in deciphering who is being referred to. And yet I persevere. I think I might just like reading so bad it’s good translations. That and the story isn’t half bad, if you can make out what’s going on, heh.

Other than this Samantha had some phone issues. Either her phone was no longer able to read her sim card, or the card itself was going bad. Luckily my father had a few phones lying about, and was generous enough to let us have them. She was able to get one to work for her, and seems well satisfied with it. I on the other hand am having fun playing around with different phones. That and since my tablet stopped charging I have another screen I can read from when I have my phone occupied with playing a game for an hour. This game is something that’s become habit for me to play a couple of times a day, and has been this way for three years. I can’t stop, and I even sacrifice reading to do so, but now I don’t have to anymore. Yay for another phone!

I still haven’t decided if I want to swap to this other phone either. The specs are rather similar, though the new one offers the benefit of being able to use an SD card for additional storage. I do miss having all my music with me at all times, though I’ve grown out of the habit of listing to anything in the car. Mostly it’s just podcasts and I can’t see myself listening to anything else, even if I love music. Though this new phone is supposed to work only on Verizon, with experimentation I was able to get it to work with my carrier, though I think the Internet is slower on it. Not that I ever use it for anything other than to look up things quickly or download a book when I finish one now and again. Either way, unless something goes wrong with my current phone I might keep it around for backup. I’ve had issues in the past with phones dying on me for no reason, and being without a functional way to communicate is unacceptable these days.

Anyway, the current book is coming along nicely. I’m nearly back to where I was before I decided to go over it and change things a bit. I hope that by next week or the following one I’ll be back to simply writing instead of fleshing things out. Since it’s been awhile, I’m excited to return to storytelling.

And with that, I shall leave you to your day. I hope you all have an enjoyable week. Until next time.

D&D continues

Howdy folks. I’m back.

So this week I’ve read thirteen books. Nice, heh. Really, twelve of those books were rather short, so not really that amazing. They are in another series translated from Chinese, and it holds the same awkward translations, though not nearly as terrible as the last. As it is, I still hold the Coiling Dragon Saga as the best. Even if it’s weirdly worded in places, it has the best power progression I’ve ever seen. As to the new series, “The Supreme God of Martial Arts”, it’s not nearly as satisfying. Mostly he keeps coming across powerful cultivators who have died, and takes their stuff. Amusing, but not as rewarding as having someone work out their own way to become stronger.

Other than that I was able to meet up with my friends again, and we continued our D&D campaign.

After the traumatic events of battle, my gnome bard was distraught, and sought the comfort of alcohol at the tavern we all were staying at. Unfortunately it wasn’t helping. Seeking relief, I went to find the town wizard to see if he had anything that could help. The wizard being a crazy person, kept talking about demons, and gave me a spell scroll without any explanation except to say all my troubles would go away if I read it. Fearing the worst, I simply took the scroll and headed back to the bar, hoping the cleric or our wizard could identify it. Unfortunately they didn’t have a pearl needed to use an identifying spell. We needed to go to an abandoned fort to get a crystal for the town wizard so he could find things in his shop before we could get such supplies.

The barman noting my continued anxiety offered to buy some powerful drugs for me for some gold, and I agreed. So before heading out to the fort, my character headed up to the room with the drugs, only to come down awhile later. Behavior now erratic and bizarre when he reappeared, he and the rest of the party headed out to the fort.

The wizard and the cleric decided to walk around the crumbling structure to see if they could find different entrances before we entered the obvious one. Unfortunately they ran into two groups of bats and were attacked. Our monk had stayed with my bard, and having heard the attack picked me up and ran towards the battle.

Things were not going well, and everyone was rolling poorly. Our attacks failed, or did little damage, but luckily the bats only got in a few hits. I tried to fire my crossbow from a distance, but a bolt hit the monk when I failed a roll. Fortunately the wizard succeeded with burning hands a couple of times, and nearly killed one group. The monk finished it off. Everyone took a step back, and I fired again. This time it hit and finished off the second group. All of this took much longer than we expected, and though I was able to heal one party member, we were all tired and had used most of our spells.

We took a short rest, with me using my song of rest, we healed up and headed into the fort. We found a trap door. Not wanting to enter without knowing what was down there, the cleric launched an attack into the darkness. We heard noises, and a kobold finally peeked out from the trap door.

Not wanting to fight, as our only reason for being here was to get a crystal, the bard noting that kobolds hate gnomes, took out his disguise kit and make himself look like a halfling and began to haggle. The kobolds wanted 50 gold for it, but after many minutes of conversation, and confusing words on his part, the kobolds finally settled for 10 gold and a mirror. The mirror having been spelled by the wizard in an attempt to help shined brightly for the moment. Having excepted the exchanged, we made ourselves ready to leave. The cleric not feeling too safe in the situation, felt it necessary to grab a boulder and block the trap door behind us. Being a Firbolg he was strong enough to move the giant rock.

We went back to town, and apparently had received enough XP to level up. So at the end of our evening we worked on our characters. And by we, I mean everyone else helped me, since I’m a lost cause when it comes to doing the actual pen and paper work.

It was a fun evening, filled with pizza and jerky, and even key-lime pie. I didn’t even mention the fact that our wizard, an elf woman, tried to question another female elf in the bar. Her attempt, with her poor charisma didn’t go as expected, and instead of being pleasant and convincing, her attempts at conversation sounded threatening, and a little bit like a sexual advance. And our monk trying to help, scared her away as well. Also the Firbolg cleric had gone shopping at the beginning of the night. He’d even brought a list of things he wanted to buy. It was quite a long list, and puzzling. Ball bearings and caltrops were on the list, and many a sack. It was an amusing exchange, and the wizard was there asking for a lock-picking tool. She just seems like she wants to be a thief after all.

Anyway, that’s all I have for you today. I hope you have a great week.
