Phone goes boom?

Greetings readers and friends. I’ve once more come back.

So for a couple of weeks I’ve been having phone issues. When a co-worker was having an issue with their phone, we realized we had the same phone. Taking my phone out of its bulky case I noticed the back of it was bulging. Oh dear, that can’t be good I thought. When I opened the back it was apparent that the battery had expanded and was ready to explode. Well, that means I’d been without a phone for a bit, but luckily another friend of mine had a battery that they let me have as they weren’t using it in their old phone. Now I’m back.

Also, I watched Beastmaster II this weekend. Oh dear god, it’s so bad it’s amazing. And it just kept getting better as it went. I’m hesitant to watch the third one now, because how can anything live up to that?

Well, that’s all I have time for this week. I’m running a bit behind today, but I’ll catch you all next time.

Go Speed Racer, GO!

Howdy y’all. I’ve returned.

So I’ve heard of the Speed Racer movie for a while now. Now mostly I’ve only heard negative things, and I was hesitant to watch it because of that. I’m not old enough to have been alive during the era when it was broadcast on television, or at least broadcast for the first time, but it is something I’ve been aware of since I was very young. The rapid fire of speech and repetition of words are notorious for the show, as is the catchy opening song. So when I went into this film I was prepared for that sort of interpretation. Instead we got vivid colors and rapid fire edits. And I’d have to say after the first few minutes of Speed’s back story, I started to really enjoy myself. By the end of the movie I was cheering wildly while laughing with joy at the final race. While I can see why there are people who didn’t enjoy it, as it is a very strange movie indeed, I feel it captures the heart of the show, while expanding on the narrative. I kept getting flashes in my mind from an anime that I really enjoy, “Redline”. Both have to do with racing, and the joy of it. While I wouldn’t say Speed Racer is better, it still has a ton of heart, and I haven’t enjoyed a movie like that in a while. Give it a watch, especially if you liked the original series, or if you liked Redline.

And, well, the next thing I watched was Beastmaster. This is certainly not the first time I’ve watched this movie, nor is it the fifth. I tend to get something different out of this movie each time I watched it, and since I watched it with someone this time, this is what we came to. The eagle is the bad guy. Yeah there’s an army that destroys the protagonists village. And yeah there’s a guy that sacrifices children to his god, but come on. That eagle just wants to eat everyone’s eyes. That and he has a cult of monsters that eat people at his command. How evil is that? Heck they show up at the end and eat an army, all at the beckoning of this eagle. Sure the tiger kills a few people, but maybe he was just trying to cuddle them and was a little too violent about it. And those ferrets? They just wanted to steal things. Yeah, a little bad, but they aren’t trying to kill anyone, and heck one of them sacrifices them self to take down the nominal bad guy at the end. It’s such a b-movie I can’t help but love it. When the movie ended, and the credits were rolling, I mentioned that I would like to see a sequel, and the person I watched it with said, “Yeah, like one where the Beastmaster travels to modern-day California to fight evil.” I laughed at this, and said, “Ha ha, yeah I’d watch the heck out of that.” because I love a stupid movie. Turns out she wasn’t joking, and Beastmaster II takes place in California. It was far too late in the night to watch it, and I refuse to watch it alone, but I’ll have to give this horrible idea of a movie a watch at some point.

And with that I’ll leave you for now. I’ll catch up with you all next week.

Movies, mostly about Aliens

Salutations to you all. I am back again.

This weekend I watched a few different movies, so I suppose I’ll talk about them a bit.

First off I watched Arrival. That was actually a really decent film, and the fact that I might have been spoiled on one of the plot points awhile ago didn’t even register in my mind while I watched. It’s about alien ships landing all over the world, and us humans trying to communicate with them. I do enjoy first contact stories, and I think this did a better job than most illustrating how “Alien” aliens really would be.

Next was Spiderman Homecoming. This movie was great. It didn’t try to restart from the beginning with how he got his powers or anything, it just kinda threw you into the middle of it. A high school Peter Parker as well this time. I enjoy this more than I thought, and I had a great time as it is probably one of the funnier Marvel movies to have come out. That and the villain was understandable, and not just out to do bad things because he’s the bad guy. Good movie, give it a watch.

Then I watch My Stepmother is an Alien. Um, I don’t even know what to say about this. It is totally a product of the 80’s, and it was nice to see the actors they had in the film. Even Seth Green makes a short appearance, and boy is he tiny. All in all I found it amusing, and a good movie to watch if you really want to see the strange things we were making back in the 80’s, and some actors we don’t see much of anymore.

Oh boy, then I watched My Favorite Martian. This movie was simply awful. I wanted to like it, as I watched the original television show when I was younger, but it wasn’t very good. However a cameo of the original actor who played the Martian did make an appearance, and that was enjoyable, but it didn’t make up for the bad story. It started out alright, but then quickly went downhill. I can’t tell if it was simply bad writing, or if Christopher Lloyd playing the martian was a poor choice. Again interesting actors are seen in this movie, but it felt as if this movie was quickly slapped together to bring in some money from whatever was happening at that point in time. But what that is escapes me as this came out in 99. I’d give this a miss, and watch something else.

Aliens apparently was the theme of my movie watching this week, save Spiderman, and I’m glad I watched them. Well, I’m glad I watched all of them save My Favorite Martian. I didn’t even plan for a theme this weekend, though I usually do. Mostly by actor, but I think a looking at these as a serious movie, a quirky movie, and something trying to be funny and missing the mark is how I would describe them. And Spiderman was simply just fun. The only thing it was missing was Jonah Jameson, and there’s only one actor who can play him, J. K. Simmons. I hope they bring him back, he was excellent.

With that I leave you to have a wonderful week. I’ll see you next time.

An older anime, and a newer parody

Hello to you. I’m back again.

So what have I been up to? Well this weekend I went back and watched a couple of things. Now I had in the past watched an anime called Magic Knights of Rayearth, the tv series. It was okay for what it was back in the day, but I didn’t get into it. I really only watched perhaps five episodes or so, and decided to move on to other things. However this weekend I watched the OVA. It is three episodes long, and each one is around 45 minutes long. So it took nearly three hours to watch. I did so with another who was a fan of the OVA from when they were younger, and was the reason years ago we watched, or attempted to watch the original series. It turns out the OVA is significantly different from the show, and is much darker and better animated. Perhaps because it was made after the original series had aired. Now I enjoyed the first episode the best out of the three, but all were good. However my opinion of it may be tainted by the amusing words that my fellow anime fan and I used to make simple scenes funnier. An example would be, there was a guy, a mage? standing on top of what looked to be Tokyo Tower, and we made up a little story for him. We thought it would be funny if he was stuck up there for years and couldn’t figure out how to get down, and was waiting on someone to help him. That of course wasn’t the case, but it was amusing to think of the logistics of a person standing there in the cold wind for years, with no bathroom or food.

And that leads me into the second thing I watched. Now I say I watched, but the anime fan accompanied me for the majority of the viewing. There is an abridged series, made by some of the same people who do the DBZ abridged series. Team Four Star is fairly well-known for making the Dragon Ball Z parody, and I of course watch that from time to time, and await further episodes. But the one that I decided to watch in full again was their Hellsing Abridged series. Ah, there is nothing better than a all powerful character who is just there to have fun. They’ve changed categorically what Alucard was from the original show into something completely different. An amusing jerk, who is just there to have a good time, instead of a vampire that just does as he’s told. Even if you haven’t watched the original show you should go watch this. They do a fantastic job of editing, and it gets even better as they’ve grown more skilled over the years. Mind you there are a couple of episodes without Alucard, and those are the least enjoyable, but when he returns it’s with a vengeance. All in all I say give this a watch, especially if you think DBZ abridged is good.

Other than that I did some writing, and we are well on our way to finishing the first draft. It was another productive day, and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, though we have gone way past where I thought we’d be with the word count at this point. However that will make it easier to edit and cut things when we get to it without diminishing the length of the book.

Until next time, I wish you a fantastic week.
