Choosing words

Salutations friends, citizens and readers.

A standard week for me has come and gone. Watched anime, of course, and re-watched Legion with some friends. Great show from Marvel. You can never tell if anything is real, and who knows, none of it might be. Of course it isn’t real at all, as it’s a TV show, but even in the narrative you can never tell if what you are seeing is real in their world.

Have I written? I did today, but I wound up doing some other things. New ideas and other projects are keeping me occupied. I still intend to get this book done, but I think it helps to do some other things while I ponder how or what I want to say. Today’s writing I’m fairly proud of. Nothing of real import happened for the story today, but the words I chose seemed to be more…. I’m not sure how to put it besides saying poetic, or lyrical. I like the way they read and sound in my head.

That’s the strange thing about books. Reading certain things can change the way you want to say things. They make you want to try to match the kind of tone, or lyrical quality another person has used in telling a story. And I think Patrick Rothfuss has a way with words that few have achieved. Dan Simmons is another. Both have an epic feel to the words chosen in telling their stories, though they go about it in a very different way. One is musical, the other is poetic. You might mistake one for the other with certain choices of phrasing, but if you really pay attention you can tell where they are getting their inspiration.

Anyway I’ve got to get back to life now. Things need doing, and I need to find some food before I go walking again. Until next week, have a good one.

Walking, watching, and writing

Welcome friends and readers, or both. I’m back for another weekly update.

Well it certainly was a week. Yup, a full seven days. Doesn’t seem like it though. It both feels shorter and longer than it should.

Many things happened, but few of them related to writing. Then again all experiences can be said to influence what is written.

After finishing all the animated Jojo I’ve moved on to My Hero Acadamia. Decent show, and I can’t wait to start the second season now. Also watched some Legion, which I think is fantastic. Still reading, and am almost done with A Wise Man’s fear. Watched a few movies over the weekend, but mostly my time was spent over at a friend’s house. Always a fun time as I get to discuss things with more people than I usually get to.

Now with writing, I haven’t given myself time. I was very tired this last week… again. I simply woke up and got around for work, and when work was done I went to bed after getting something to eat. It can be exhausting walking as much as I do, but at least I’m losing weight, or getting fit. Depending on the week. I found my feet in better condition over the weekend than last. The previous weekend it felt as though I had broken a toe, but that went away when I went back to work. Apparently walking is what my foot needed, so I guess I’ll get some more walking in. Not like I have much of a choice there though. Perhaps I walk so much now because my previous book’s title, or maybe that’s just coincidence.

Anyway, the book is still coming along. When I don’t have time to write, I can still edit, or think of new things to write. Which makes the time it takes to write shorter, at least for me. If I spend my time thinking, when I return to the keyboard the words flow out fairly well. And today I got some more in because of that.

So that was my update. Not too heavy on writing, but sometimes that’s what happens. I hope you all have another great week, I’ll see you next Monday.

Watching and Reading things

Greetings once more. I have returned once again.

Well this last week was certainly something. I began reading The Name of the Wind, and I couldn’t put it down. Finished it in a couple of days, and now I’m reading the next one in the Kingkiller Chronicles.

This book really sucked me in. The world building is fantastic, as the setting is filled with history, and the way it uses language is fantastic. I’ve not read anything that was so filled with prose and poetic phrasing since Hyperion. I can’t wait to read more, though I’ll probably lose more sleep because of it.

I also finished with the latest Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure anime. I can’t say it was the best, but it was still Jojo. I have a personal fondness for Joseph, so seeing him so old and feeble made me sad. Battle Tendency, and then seeing him still so strong in Stardust Crusaders was wonderful, but now he’s no longer a huge character in the story. But that being said, Diamond is Unbreakable was a fun ride that had some of the best moments of any parts.

As to my own writing, I’ve done only a little. Mostly reviewing what the co-author did over the weekend. Though I did add my own words to the end, and cleaned up a few things here and there. We’re making good progress, and have done some talking about how we’re getting from one point to another. All in all I’m pleased with the story, I just can’t wait until we write the final scene. It’s going to be something.

Until next time friends, have a good week.

Working with another improves your own abilities

Salutations well-wishers. I have returned.

You know what’s difficult? Trying to tell you all how things are going with this book without revealing everything. I’m not talking about revealing the process, I’ve tried to be transparent, but what the story is all about.

So anyway, another meeting with the co-author was had. Talking about what we’ve planned for the plot, and working out the best way to tell it. As per usual I write in my own way, as do they, so I’m just trying to do the in-between work that’ll lead up to the events we discussed.

What makes it difficult for me to write is that I want them to put to page what they have in mind, then I can work around it. When they’d skipped ahead it made it very easy for me to try to connect up to it. But now that we are at the same point in the story I find it difficult to write what they wanted. Not that I have any issue with where they want to take it, quite the contrary. I just can’t seem to remember all the little details we discussed. Perhaps I should record us talking, heh.

That all being said I have written a bit, and am leading up to the point were the main characters meet up with yet another set. I think I’m doing decently. The co-author though is much better at the little details. Apparently they think I’m better at dialogue, so I’ve been focusing on that, while I try to improve the detail work by looking back at how they explained things. I think we are both improving from this joint effort.

I enjoy writing this story, and I look forward when I go back to the others that I’ve started over the years. I have one that is close to 6% completed, one that’s close to 14%, and another that is 20%. This is all first draft stuff, so I could easily change everything about them, but it’s kinda fun looking back on them, and how much I’ve grown as a writer in such a few months just by working on a story with another person.

Anyway, it’s been a decently pleasant week. I hope the same for all of you. Until next time.
