Battered, but never broken

Well, here is what I didn’t talk about last week. I had laid down about 10 o’clock Friday night to sleep. Like usual I got up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water and use the restroom. What followed was not usual.

Tripping on the carpet that had crumpled itself in front of the toilet had me fall into the shower. My face was heading directly towards the faucet, and would have smashed it in. Luckily I’m fairly agile, and I rotated away to the side, but I was still falling, this time backwards. Crashing into the curtain I pulled each ring off the curtain pole, and would up smashing my head and back into the wall. Leaving a blood splatter, some hair, and perhaps some scalp in the process.

I laid there stunned for a few minutes, wondering if I was alright. After awhile of this I grew bored, and stood up. At least I had avoided damaging my face, but now I was concerned that I perhaps had concussed myself. Swaying slightly unsteadily I looked into the mirror to check for black eyes, a good signal of concussions, and found none there. Cursing such things, I went back to bed and tried to fall asleep again, not recommended for head injuries. Fortunately, or unfortunately for my own restfulness, I couldn’t get back to dreamland. Instead I stared at the ceiling for several hours, eventually giving up and picked up my tablet to read whatever it was I was reading the night before I wound up falling asleep.

Luckily I always have a backup of my books for whomever I’ve trusted for such things, so my latest book would have still seen the light of day, but I’m nowhere near finishing what I’m working on now. It’s been difficult getting into the right mindset to put words to page, but I’ve still worked on it, though only slightly since then.

May none of you have such things happen. But just in case, have a back up!

I stand knowing I’ve done what needs to be done

I spent much of yesterday trying to finish up this latest book of mine. I didn’t quite make it. This morning however I reached the end.

After reading the final word of the book I immediately jumped into formatting it for the index. I don’t know why but index’s always give me trouble. I almost spent as much time trying to get it to work as I did this morning rereading the last couple of chapters. Yet another reason why I didn’t do chapters in my first books. It’s so much easier just to keep writing and not have to worry about marking a place for a new chapter.

Anyway, I believe I’m almost done. I’ve thought of a title as I edited, but I want to have another person’s thoughts on it before I announce anything. But I will say this book is about time travel. Or I should say it has that element to it. Other than that I think it’s my best work so far, so I’m anxious to get it out there for people to read. But since I’m not an artist I’ll have to wait on a cover, otherwise you’d just get a blank cover with text on it. That I don’t think would get very far, and I love having something visual for my books.

Other than that I’ve not been doing much, though I did take a break yesterday and watched Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas again. I love that movie. It has a great visual style, and it’s surreal enough to keep me coming back to watch it. Hunter was such a vivid character that I can’t help but be interested in what he deems important. That and Gilliam, the director, has a fantastic eye for the surreal.

Anyway, with luck this book will be out shortly. I can’t wait to share it with the world.

Be well.

Update: Haven’t gotten back to writing in the latest novel. Likely I’ll be starting that up again here shortly.

Time goes by, so slowly

I’m still working on getting an appropriate title for the book. I had one I really liked, but it had already been taken by another book. One that a Sci-Fi/Fantasty book club podcast read a few months ago.

After hearing that, I racked my brain for another. I’ve asked several people for help, but nothing seems to feel appropriate. Especially after having felt so good about the title I had. I almost want to use that old title, but I still want it to feel unique.

Unfortunately this leaves me in a bit of a conundrum as what to do. I’d rather have a title ready for the artist before they begin. They know the story, so it wouldn’t be a problem to slap a name on it after it’s done. However, I feel that you should always have the title in mind, just so you might be able to incorporate it into the piece.

That all being said I’m nearly through my last run through. I still have to set up the chapters to link with the index, but that shouldn’t take too much time.

It’s almost time again, and I’m feeling the jitters that I do each time I publish something new. Anxiety is the bane of the creative. It makes it difficult to focus on what to do next as you always feel doubt. Or at least I think you should. Not enough to stop you from pushing forward, but just enough so that you know you are putting all your effort into make the best thing you can.

Btw, I’m sorry I missed out on posting last week. My day-to-day life was getting to me, but I think I’m doing better now. A person’s words can affect us more than we ever truly know

Be well.

Update: Haven’t gotten back to writing in the latest novel, but I’ve been really driving myself hard on finishing up and polishing this next one.
