Panic sets in

As the days count down, like the dwindling numbers in my bank account, my fear and apprehension grows. I’m taking today to go through everything I can think of to improve this situation.

I’ve not much to say yet, as I’ve heard nothing back from anyone. It’s rather frustrating knowing I’ve put so much effort into this, and other, ventures, and find no fruit being borne. At least while I’m starving and living in the streets I’ll know I tried.

See ya space cowboy.

Update – A breakfast of Pancakes and Fear!

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

Practice makes Perfect

Alright, I’ve finished another swing through the third book. It wasn’t as hard as re-reading it all over again, but it did pose some difficulties reworking and rewording. I think I can say with some certainty that this one will be the best one yet. Then again I say that each time I write something new.

I suppose that’s to be expected, as I would like to think no matter what a person will get better the more they do things. Even a 10th degree black-belt will get better when they practice.

We continue to sharpen our skills when we use them. I just hope I don’t go back to being as rusty as I was when I first wrote Deathship. I still think it’s a decent book, but yes, it’s my first completed and published novel. It may not stand the test of time, but I’m still proud of it.

So, no matter what you want to do with your life, you must work hard on maintaining and improving your abilities. If you want to fix cars, never stop learning. If you want to be a martial artist, it’s the same. Self-improvement never ends. Be the best you that you can be. I think that is the meaning of life. At least it’s mine.

Update – The third book’s grammar check is completed. I just hope to have more people look at it soon.

More Grammar

Surprisingly, or maybe not,  I’m getting my butt handed to me by grammar check. There are things I’ve left as they are as I want to check with the editors before I change them, but apparently there were a few rules I wasn’t following. Such as not to have ‘As’ or ‘If’ as the beginning of a sentence.

I would call it a frustrating day, but that just means this book will read better than the previous ones. Though I plan to go through them again. Since they are ebooks I can easily modify them. I’m not going to change much, that would be horrible for anyone who’s already read it, but I will tweak it where they need it.

I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get to them. I’m focusing on getting this latest book edited, while also writing a new novel. Of course I’m still planning on working, so that’ll take another chunk of time out of it for me. If only some benefactor would take pity on me. Ah well, we all have to work for what we have. It just seems I’ll have to do the work in something not writing to make ends meet.

In the end, to answer yesterday’s question. I need grammar check, apparently badly. Though I read it always in my own voice and the way I speak. It’s strange to see how different the written language is when you compare it to how we converse in person.

Update – Halfway through the first run of grammar check in the last book of the Outsider Series. Tomorrow looks to be another busy day.

Grammar Check, who needs it?

Whew. I sure am glad I was able to find a new app for Libre Office. I had been under the impression it was already using grammar check, but it wasn’t. I do apologize for relying only on myself and my editors to correct those issues. I spent today clearing up the latest novel’s issues, but I’m thinking of feeding the third novel through it later.

I’ve got some stuff I want to get done today, like applying for other places to work, so it’ll have to wait until tomorrow. If it detects as many errors as I fear, that might be all I can do tomorrow. However, I’m happy that I have the opportunity to correct it before I publish it. I still need to get my editors on it, but at least I can do some cleaning up on my own now.

A writer is only as good as his tools. The largest tool is the mind, but a good word-processor is a factor as well. I just hope I don’t disappoint. I’ve had a bit of feedback related to grammar, so it made me worried. Thankfully Libre Office has tons of tools for a writer. Now I can be just that much more sure about my corrections.

I was Interviewed

So I went to an interview today. It was interesting to go through the old back and forth again. As I’ve not really left the house in over a year to talk to a new person, it was fun to see what this person found important.

I was fairly nervous before it started, but as soon as I met my interviewer I think I felt a bit more relieved. The worry I had was that it would be a group interview, as I saw so many people there, but there was another job being interviewed. I think it was for a temp agency, and they did all have to go in together. Perhaps it was just an orientation for them, but I don’t know. Since I’d never been interviewed in a group I was unsure of my ability to stand out, but then again I assume my look and unemotional face would do the trick. Though standing out doesn’t always mean it’s a good thing.

But I’m hopeful for the future, and I look forward to hearing back from them.

Emotional vs Intellectual stances

Another weekend was lived. I spent it over at a friend’s house, and it was enjoyable. We had many a conversation about religion this time, and I found it fun. But as I was not the only one there, conversations turned to games.

I’m not a huge gamer anymore, so I have little interest in them, save for the technology, and sometimes the story. When that happened I wondered off and tried to engage another there in a different conversation. This was fun as well, but it was more about mundane things. I hadn’t talked with this person in-depth in a long time, and it was good to catch up with her. But soon she had to leave, she had work the next day in the morning, and eventually things wound down for all of us.

All in all though I relish the moments when we can spend extended periods of time together. It’s nice to have people you can share your inner thoughts with, even if you have a significant other. As partners you encourage each other, so sometimes it feels like no matter what you say they’ll accept you. I like to incite controversy, and if you just agree with whatever uncomfortable stance I’m devil’s advocating for it makes it less interesting. I’ve no issue with this, it’s just more fun for me when someone disagrees.

I also find it fun to see how people can intellectually agree with a stance, and yet emotionally find it distasteful. It’s in these confused stances I like to delve in to conversation. Mostly when it’s an emotional stance it turns out it’s because we’ve been raised in a society that has certain morals that are instilled in us. However a free mind might be able to work out from those, and see that intellectually there is no reason to stop a person from doing certain distasteful things.

I look forward to seeing them again next month. I hope either I, or they, have something new for us to discuss.

Reality and Pragmatism

What do you know? Do you know anything? Is what you perceive all you know, or do you find information in things you’ve never experienced? How would you convey this, or have it conveyed to you?

I would say the only thing I know is myself. I know my likes and dislikes. I know my experiences because I can remember having done them, but then again they could have been dreamed or implanted by aliens or some such. I don’t believe this, but it is a possibility. I couldn’t tell you if I’m just a mind being monitored in a lab, or if I’m merely a part of someone’s dream.

However I tend to live pragmatically. So what I see, hear, touch, feel, and smell I will assume to be true. There is no proof for this, but it is pragmatic. To live like nothing is real could result in some horrific outcomes, like traffic accidents, or much worse, death. Now I can’t tell you if there is life after death, but again, pragmatically, we’ve no tangible evidence. You may believe as you wish, but you will not be pragmatic for doing so.

Then what is a reasonable belief if we have no proof of anything? In the end none are reasonable. Nothing can be proven. Even if you experience death first-hand, and then find yourself waking up in heaven/hell, there is no proof that is where you are. But then again the saying “perception is reality” would mean you are there, as you are here on Earth now. But that would also mean dreams are real as well. We experience them, we even live them while asleep. What is the difference?

Personally I will go with pragmatism. If I seem to be in a room typing away on a keyboard, that is the life I’m living now. If things deviate from what I perceive as normal, it may take time, but I will accept it eventually. So look around, and think about the life you’ve led. It will most certainly be different from my own, or others, but that is all we have.

Boredom

I’ve an interview soon. Once more will I be tasked with work that is not of my own making. An interesting transition, and I’m a bit excited by the prospect.

While I’ve enjoyed setting my own schedule, it has not been so different from the hours that many work. Waking up early, writing, and doing things that need to be done, I haven’t lost my ability to acclimate myself to such things. At times I’ve grown bored, but now I don’t think that’ll be an issue. When you work for others, you rush home to do your own thing, and those things never bore you.

Then again, may you live in interesting times is a curse. Boredom is a blessing given to few, then again these days we find ourselves feeling this way often. It probably stems from our increasing influx of information that we either are force-fed by news, or by our own making. We seek more and more, and when we find the flow slowing, we grow bored.

Living simply might be best for a calm mind, as everything would make us fascinated. When was the last time you went outside and simply dug in the ground. See how the soil crumbles or clumps? Isn’t that interesting? The world is more than the light we receive from these boxes we sit in front of for hours. A computer can gain you access to so much, and a television might as well, but there is something to be said about viewing the world with your own eyes instead of through someone else’s lens.

So enjoy the life you have. Go outside when you can, and play. Just because you’re and adult doesn’t mean you can’t explore. Go for a hike, walk, or bike ride. See the world as it is, and don’t rely on others to show it to you.

Still Editing, Don’t worry.

Just so you don’t think the third book in the Outsider Series has been forgotten, I worked on it today. I received some edits from one of my editors, and reviewed their comments, and changes. Mostly she complained about my liberal use of commas, or lack of them. Apparently I’m either way too happy to use them everywhere, and then when I realize I shouldn’t, I stop using them all together.

While I have a decent sized vocabulary, I also use the word ‘said’ too often. I think I do this just so I can continue writing and get the main story done. I really should have gone back and used more appropriate words in the last two books, and I did, a little, but I should have been more thorough. Currently my latest book is taking advantage of all the ways a person might say ‘said’.

It’s always these little things that help make a book easier to read. If you see words that repeat constantly you pick up on those. I recall listening to an audio book a few years back, and one word kept cropping up constantly. It was very distracting, and made me like the story less. The author is fairly well-known, and this was like the eighth or ninth book in the series. Perhaps they just wanted to get the story done like I’ve been doing. Running out of time will do that. However if you ignored that particular idiosyncrasy it was still a good book.

In the end I’m still happy with the third book, it just needs some touch ups. I hope to have them done soon, but again I can’t force another person to work on what I want. We’ll see when it finally gets done.
