The New Year

The new year is upon us. I find this exciting. I’ve spent this entire year trying to write, and I think I’ve accomplished much.

I’ve written three books, and have begun working on a fourth. I’ve released two of these books, and I see a spike of interest in them. It’s exciting to see that something I wrote being read by so many, and I look forward to hearing what people say.

I don’t expect praise or anything. I know that what I write, and even the way I write, might not please everyone, but I’m still interested in hearing from anyone.

It’s been difficult to sustain a household with just my savings, and I hope to see if I can continue this little venture into the new year. I’ve only a little bit saved up, so it looks like a job will be required to let me live on. I’m not looking forward to this, but perhaps I’ll find something interesting, and challenging.

So here is to the new year. May it be as successful as the last, and perhaps a little better. I’ve put myself out there, and I’m glad for it. I hope I can continue to create these books for myself, and for all of you who enjoy them. May you have a wonderful year!

The New Book

This new book I’m working on has its own set of challenges for me. First of all it is written in the third person. That is something I’m not used to, as my stories have always been through the first person. It complicates the way you talk about the main character, but I think I’ve a handle on it.

Second is the nature of the narrative. These people are fairly far removed from the way I view the world. This would make me nervous if I wasn’t familiar with these types of people, but it still seems awkward to write individuals so far removed from my own viewpoint. A challenge, but it’s actually is fun.

Third is I’m now using chapters. So far I have a chapter written, and a little more. If I decide a name for the chapter first it seems to drive the context for each, which makes things a little easier for me. Instead of letting the characters lead me everywhere this gives me a little more control over them. They’ve already developed some personality, so they are already fighting me slightly, but so far they’re manageable. Soon though I fear their personalities will start making decisions for me, and I’ll have to wrangle them again.

Thus speaking, I’m saying I am enjoying writing this story. Yesterday I was unsure, but I had taken a little break from writing last week for Christmas. Every time I take time off it makes it harder to return, but forcing myself to write again seems to bring it back soon enough. Then again it was Monday. That has always been my toughest day for writing, but I’m unsure why.

When I was writing at least 1,000 words everyday of the week I still had trouble Mondays. Perhaps the natural weekly work cycle I had before has led to this, but it doesn’t seem to be wearing off even after nearly a year. I suppose I will just continue pushing forward as always, and see where it leads.

In the end the only way to combat writers block is to write. I’ve been doing so for a long time, but only this last year have I been doing it full-time. You must do it everyday you can, but you’ll burn out quickly if you don’t take breaks. I’m glad for my weekends. Make sure you are doing what you love, but take some time off for yourself now and again.

Honesty

Is honesty the best policy?

A horrible past explained explicitly

may cause those around you

to soon not be

Do we all hide monsters deep inside

and once revealed

though shared by many

others will shun such exposed truthfulness?

I offer none what they don’t ask

but what right do I have to give?

I fear that though I am always honest

few would understand

the type of man that I am

There is no secret hidden if asked

I will expose all to those who inquire

but I don’t wish any

to be sucked into my own mire

In my honesty I tend to overshare

and perhaps that is my burden to bear

lies are not in me

as they only cause rifts and tears

I find my own morals right

but others would see them as reason to start a fight

so must I mind my own truth at all times

or be committed for crimes?

I break no autonomy

nor will I ever

that is who I am

will I change? Never!

Everyone is important

we all deserve life

to offer harm to another

causes only strife

So be careful if you ask

the truth is all you will receive

from this person

whom is myself that I perceive

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions

I’ve recently started watching a new anime. It’s called Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions. It about dealing with the delusion that at a certain age many people feel they are somehow more important than anyone else. That they perhaps have magical powers, and this leads them to behave abnormally.

The main protagonist got over this, but is now, after moving to a new school to start fresh, being confronted by someone who is still behaving strangely. All he wanted to do was be normal, but with this other person he continually is reminded of his outrageous behaviour.

I’m a little over halfway through the first season, and so far I find it interesting. I recall feeling I was special during the age the characters are, and I wonder if that is something we all feel at one point in life. I never acted differently because of it, as I always doubted my own beliefs, and they could not be shown, but still interesting coincidences continued to happen, and even still do from time to time.

In all honesty I think the human mind wants to put a pattern upon this chaotic world that has none. This leads us to think that if we do something, an almost magical event will transpire. Or that we are inherently imbued with luck, or some other advantage others don’t have. Religions have sprung up because of these beliefs, and is why they will continue to do so.

In the end I think I’ll continue watching this show, and see what other thoughts come to me. This is why I consume anime, it causes me to wonder about the motivations of either the creator, or the characters in these shows.

Our Holiday Movie

So what do you do with a group of people for Christmas evening? After having served up and consumed some wonderful Masla, we proceeded to enjoy some delicious alcoholic beverages. Two of the people invited over were the parents of a close friend, and they thought we should view a classic movie.

Struggling for a time to get the television set up and ready to place this film, we eventually had it all together. At this point we had all become tipsy, and we were ready for a laugh.

The film we wound up watching was a spoof of the classic television series Flash Gordon, so of course it was titled Flesh Gordon. The acting was appropriately horrible and over the top as everyone almost immediately is hit by a sex-ray, causing all under its influence to strip naked and attack anyone nearby. As things progressed it only got weirder, and we viewed even more nude people.

To say this was a unique experience to have with friends and their family is an understatement. It was said that evening if you want to wash away any uncomfortable feelings between people all you have to do is watch a porn, and this film came so close to pornography that it might as well have been.

Most surprisingly of all was the use of claymation for a couple of the monsters. I was impressed by the special effects all together, and it seems a fair amount of money was spent on this spoof. I expected it to feel more low-budget, but this gem from the 70’s has mostly stood the test of time.

Had the acting been better and the sexulazation been reduced this easily could have become a great movie. However it stands as a great cult classic that few seem to know about. I recommend watching it with your family, just be prepared for the awkward looks. We spent the evening laughing so hard that we had to stop our drinking lest we consume even more in hysterics.

Happy Holidays

What do you plan to do during this holiday? Do you plan to just stay home, or are you going out to see friends and family? Is it important to do anything different, or is it alright to just have it be another day, albeit a day off?

Let’s start off by me explaining what I plan to do. I’ll have some people over tonight and tomorrow. We shall be enjoying each others company while we do our regular things. Nothing unusual, but the celebratory nature of the season should spice up the gathering. Simple gifts may be exchanged, but mostly we’ll be doing our usual thing.

Should we be doing more? I don’t think that’s required. It’s your day to do with as you please. If you want to do nothing, then do nothing. I plan on watching the Hogfather again, as I think it’s wonderful. Based upon the book with the same title this is a three-hour made for tv movie. I’ve been watching it for years in my own version of celebration. I’ve shared it with a few people over the years, and they seem to like it. Perhaps this year more will be converted to its use as a holiday special. Want to know more, look it up. I’ll just say that I think it brings up many interesting topics.

This all being said, I hope you have a good winter celebration, whatever it is. I’ll be celebrating the winter solstice. Though that was this last Sunday, I tend to do so until the end of the year, ending with the New Year’s Eve party. I hope you have as much fun, or more than I will.

More edits for book 3

I had the editor over yesterday and we edited ten libre office pages for the third book. We could have done much more, but of course we wound up conversing. We talked about the freedom of speech, as that was yesterday’s topic, and I think she sides with me.

I then wound up showing her the first few hundred words of the new book, and she said she was hooked. Apparently I wrote something that made her want to know more, but then again she’s the curious type.

I’m not sure when she’ll be over next, she’s busy being a babysitter for her grandchild most days, and it’s been hard for her to make it over. I suppose I could go visit her there, but then I’d have an extremely hard time writing.

I have myself a routine that allows me to write. I’m afraid any change would cause me to be unable to turn out anything. I tried it when I was donating plasma. I visited a friend’s house that lived in the area, and they allowed me the use of their back room. I plugged in my computer, and typed away. The most I was able to write was around 500 words, while good, isn’t the kind of output I want to do on a daily basis. It already took me far longer than I wanted to write the third book, and now I fear the editing will be just as long. I mean it should be, after all I need to ensure everything is correct, but I get disheartened when I see that it could be out there with the other two now.

Anyway, it was a good day yesterday. Ate a frozen pizza, and watched some anime. Wound up finishing Sword Art Online season 2… and yes I had tears in my eyes. I don’t think either of the season’s are all that great. Too bad because the idea is interesting. Oh well, I can hope I’ll get more Accel World at some point. Now that was a fun show.

Freedom of Speech

When you speak I think you should be free to say anything. That means there are no repercussions that involve anything other than more speech back. You can say horrible things, and a person may not wish to be around you any more, and that is fine, but to use physical force against anyone for simply saying a thing you disagree with is immoral.

I could say I dislike men or women, and the response should be at harshest others disagreeing with me verbally. I’m allowed to say and feel anything, as are you. However if you take me away and imprison me for my opinion you’ve broken my autonomy. You have no right to do that unless I’ve broken your own autonomy.

You are also free to cease your interactions with me. That is your choice, but that doesn’t mean you have the moral high ground to stand on when I’m wrong in your opinion. We all have opinions, and they differ greatly between us. You do not have to listen to me, nor do I have to listen you, ever. You don’t even have to agree with me right now. But if you think it is alright to punish a person with more than a non-physical reprimand then you have gone beyond yourself. You only have the right to do with as you wish to yourself, that is of course unless your autonomy is at risk of being broken.

Is your autonomy broken when the majority of people disagree with you, and you have no say in how to live your life… YES! Of course it is. If you don’t have the ability to choose what you can do with your body, or how to live your life, you are being used by others.

I may think it is stupid for people to refuse to take vaccines that have proven their worth, but it is their right to decide to do it or not. Some may find birth-control abhorrent, yet is it not the woman’s body? They are not forcing you to take or not take these things, therefore they aren’t breaking your autonomy. However with vaccines there is an argument for herd immunity. But individuals still have the right to refuse. You could cease interacting with those people, and you can refuse service to anyone. If you do that too much you will not have anyone to call customers though, at least I would think so. It is hard to tell if a person has been vaccinated, but that is a chance we take with everyone, as anyone could be sick at any time.

In the end there should be no laws about speech. We should be free to say anything, and take our medicine when we say something horrible. There are already repercussions for acting like a fool, and that is ostracization. If you are unliked for your opinions then you will have no one to share them with. That is the risk and reward for saying anything. Say good things, gain people to hear your voice, say nasty and hate-filled things, and lose any worth you had before.

Choose your words well, they represent you far more than what you look like. They are more powerful than anything else we do. They shape the world into a place where others can converse, or they can cause great evil. You are responsible for them, and you must be your own guardian.

The Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice is upon us. Tomorrow the days will once again grow longer, and the darkness will lessen. Take this time to look inward, and find out who you are today.

When there is no light we have but ourselves to look at, and that is the advantage to these ever-growing nights. But soon the light will return, and we shall be able to once more cast our thoughts outward.

If you meditate, today is the best day to do so. Find yourself a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed, and seek the void. There you might find secrets that you’ve kept hidden from yourself. Your guilts, your pleasures, your true purpose. These things are your own, do not run away from them. You may not be able to act on them, and sometimes you shouldn’t, but it is far better to know why you think and do things than to be left unknowing.

Hold on to yourself, and know thyself more deeply. You are the only constant companion in your life. Others may come and go, and some may be with you nearly constantly, but in the darkest parts of your mind you can never share, you must come to understand by yourself.

No one is an island, and yet we stand alone in our own understanding. Give yourself the time to know you, and you shall find barriers fall down between you and others. Perhaps only because you now know why you dislike and love things. Do not be ignorant of your feelings, let this knowledge of self bring into focus a world where you know why you do anything.

Pee-wee’s Big Adventure

Last night I watched Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. From the viewpoint that every character is drunk, it tends to make more sense. Is it then that we act juvenile when we are inebriated?

If we were to look at Pee-wee as an adult who never grew up, that would make sense too, but it just seems so strange. I know it’s a character, but his reactions seem so awkward for anyone who has lived as long as his body appears. We know he’s not an idiot, he’s able to disguise himself, and even accomplish friendships to those around him who are apparently adult. His obsession with his bike is like many people’s obsession with their vehicles, so that isn’t so strange. Then again I love my bike, but not like Pee-wee does his.

This was the first time I had seen this movie since I was a child, and I noticed far more adult themes running through it. All in all it was still amusing to the adult me as it had been when I was a first grader. Of course for different reasons. Slapstick is something even a child might laugh at, but from my understanding of humor, it’s our empathic response to negatives that happen to others. We laugh when something is so awful that we must laugh. A grown man acting as a child is humorous because it’s so sad. We continuously watch this person reject the affection of others because of his childlike nature, and that is sad as well.

I would recommend watching it if you haven’t seen it before, or if it has been years. It was a one of the first movies directed by Tim Burton, and you can see shadows of what he began to do in his later works. While I may not like everything he does, the mix of whimsical childlike nature with darker tones is something that for some reason still appeals to me. I look forward to seeing what comes next.
