Do you know what it is like to have something to say, something important, and have no response? I try very hard to think up something interesting, or important, to write here daily and very little happens because of it. I think this is normal, and I’ve expected it, but is still disheartening. Perhaps I am not the most eloquent person on the planet, and perhaps what I have to say is not important to others, but I still find it strange there is so little interaction. Then again do I respond to others?
Rarely do I like, favorite, or follow someone on here, or elsewhere. Before I would do so immediately, but I soon realized people who do so are just looking for more followers and could care less about what you have to say. Perhaps I’ve said things that made those few who do actually follow me, to read what I say, not wish to be associated with me. There is nothing wrong with that, I just find it interesting there has been very little in the way of interaction lately.
I do notice people on twitter retweet or follow me daily, and for that I’m grateful, but mostly I think it is because I’ve used hashtags. As for Tumblr it seems if I write poetry, especially about love, that is the only time I gain a new follower, or a repost. Google Plus is dead, and Facebook is nearly the same way. I have my posts here cross posted to Goodreads and Amazon’s author blogs, and I’ve seen no interaction at either place, which I find unusual. I’ve also posted a few times to Reddit, and only a few times did I see any traction from there. If I were to make my book free at some point I’m unsure if anyone would even look at it.
Are we all so self-centered that we only look for people who are saying what we want to say, and then point to them to illustrate our opinions? Do I do this? If you follow my twitter feed you will see that I like several videos a day, and not all of them are just amusing. Some of them have things to say that I think are important and I think they illustrate the point I would have. So perhaps I am no different. I find it an unusual trait to possess, but understandable. On the internet we only look at the things that we like, and shun the rest as if what they have to say is inherently idiotic.
A person who is a Republican on Reddit would be downvoted into oblivion, and the same goes with anyone who doesn’t agree with the global warming trend. Even if they have valid points for either they will be ignored simply because they are different and challenge the viewpoints held by many. At that point it is useless to try to have a conversation with people who have different opinions than you, and you will never learn why others hold them. You won’t learn, you won’t grow, you will stagnate. This is normal human behaviour, and all you have to do is look at how long it took for Newtonian Physics to be replaced with Einsteinian. Even scientists are not beyond this, even though they claim to use the scientific method, it can still take a generation for a new theory to be recognized as better, or more valid.
In the end we are all inherently selfish, and there are good reasons to be so. Those who claim to be otherwise are either self-deluded, or lying. However knowing this we can work together and find a mutually beneficial world in which to live in. I will help you if you help me. This is how civilizations work, and to do otherwise causes their downfall.
